Microsoft, and "Look-out" wars aside (I'm not interested)...

I have had this problem for several months. When I reply to an HTML
e-mail, I type a few words, the cursor never moves. Wait 15 seconds, and
the words I typed appear.

Sometimes, my whole PC does it, if it's been running for a few days.

I remember searching the net, and reading that if I kept a CD in the
drive, this lessens the whole system stalling every few seconds, and it
seeems to manage it o.k., but the HTML e-mail never gets better.

Keep CD in drive: Nonsense.

- When you're experiencing the problem, watch the hard disk activity light
and see if it's flickering. Let us know.

- How big's the hard disk, and how much free space do you have immediately
after starting the computer, but BEFORE you've loaded any programs (other
than the ones that always start in the background, like your AV program)?
