All of this raises some questions for me. The lowest bass note
wavelengths
are 30-ish feet long. Not sure about the length for notes on the upper
half
of the A & D strings, but I suspect it's longer than 8", the distance
from
the mike to the speaker cones. So, what is gained by sticking a mike
there?
Pick up the sound of the finger attack?
Just because teh wavelength is 30' long doesn't mean a mic in front of
the cone can't detect it.
Some engineers will blend cabinet sound and direct sound to get the
voice of a cabinet. They need to fight with phase cancellation to do
it well though.
I wonder if this is why the bass sounded like mud. Exact same bass guitar I
own, too. The club's got a couple of 18" subwoofers under the stage, but
that doesn't explain much because in a different club, I've heard subwoofers
that size sound really nice & tight.
that;s got more to do with the way the pa system is setup & eq'd, as well as
the eq the sound guy puts on the bass - "boost the bottoms, cut the mids,
just a bit of top end.." - the proverbial smiley face, and the kick drum. of
course, we all know that most of the definition of any good bass sound is
all in the mids. if he's putting a huge shelving eq on the bottom end
(<200Hz or so) of your (possibly post eq) send, & pulling out all the mids,
of course it's going to sound like mud...
Who knows........
not the sound guy, that's for sure :)
A close friend of mine, who I'll call Mrs. Nagstein, comes to most shows and
has no reservations whatsoever about having words with the sound person. She
has excellent taste in bass tonality, and to paraphrase James Brown, she
don't take no mess. :-)
i know the exact same type of punters, except they have absolutely no idea
of what it should sound like. "it sounds a little too punchy! can you pull
out the punch?" yeah, sure. just yell into my ear like that again.....
cheers,
timbo.
