Giving Notice (to a band)

Hey guys,
I am having a lot of problems with a band I have been working with for
several months and I'm at the point where enough is enough. Next week I am
going to tell them that I will play through the month but come September I
am done. I'll offer to fill in if they have trouble finding a replacement
but we'll have to negotiate beyond this month on a gig-by-gig basis
dependant on my schedule.
This is a professional thing, not a group of buddies playing for fun.
So my question is: how do you think it should be handled? In person after a
gig? Before or after a rehearsal? By phone, by e-mail? They are not
treating me in a respectful way at all so I have to be professional but I am
not going out of my way to be accommodating for them.
As soon as I reached the decision I got a call to go do an audition
tonight and I was offered the gig starting next month. They don't work
enough for me (3-5 gigs a month instead of the 8-12 I want) but they are a
lot of fun and super nice people so I think I will offer to play with them
at least for a while, until I find something to keep me busy. On my way out
the door for the audition the band leader (from the band I am about to
leave) called to tell me: "Hey man if you see any ads up saying I am looking
for a bass player don't freak out. I want to hire some subs in case there
are conflicts so I am putting ads up for every position in the band." I've
never had a gig conflict or given him any indication that I would have a
conflict requiring a sub in the future. Does he think I was born
yesterday?!
What do you guys think?
-Jonathan
