Slapping - getting the right sound

I'm not much of a slapper. In fact, I just mess around with it from time to
time, but I'd really like to get more consistent with it. My problem (one
of many, I'll admit), but the one that bugs me most is that my bass doesn't
give a satisfactory pop when I hit the strings. It's partly my technique
(noob) and partly, I think, my gear. I have a Fender American Precision and
a Carvin 6-string with active EQ. The Carvin can be cranked up and gives
more pop, but the Fender, when I turn up the treble, only gives an anemic
pop. I'm running through and Ampeg BR-2 with a Peavey tube preamp in front.
How many of you slap with a precision? How do you amplify it? If I had the
$$ right now, I'd go buy a better amp. For now though, I have to make due.
Or is it the bass I should focus on? A Jazz perhaps? That seems to be what
I see people use a lot for slapping. I had a Stingray for a while, but it
was too darned heavy and I sold it.
Ideally, I'd like to use what I have right now until I'm worthy of an
upgrade or new piece of equipment.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Mark
