Most guitar players acknowledge that country guitar players are more
skilled than their rock counterparts. My question is, do bass players
also feel bassists in country are more skilled than in rock? Because
my first instict is to say no. Older, more traditional country
especially seemed to have rather predictable, even boring, bass
lines.
As for politics in country music, I thought it was intersting (and
even bizarre) that the Dixie Chicks were on top of the VH1 video list
for months while they weren't even getting any airplay on country
radio stations.
While I have no use for any entertainer or group who tries to use his
celebrity for political ends, I think the actual situation there was that
when country music showed no further interest in the DC's they changed
their genre to some form of pop or rock. Let me clear that so it doesn't
get misconstued. I don't care what your political position is, it has no
place on an entertainment stage. YMMV
Gerry
I think celebrities have as much right to express their political views as
anyone else does, and if they choose to do it in whatever medium they gained
their celebrity from, that's fine too. The Dixie Chicks knew that expressing
their polotical views on stage might have a negative effect on their
popularity, and I applaud their courage for doing it in spite of that.
Comedians do it all the time, I don't see why other celebrities can't as
well. U2 does it, Sinead O'Conner did it and it cost her her career. It's
called having the courage of your convictions.
