Re: Lost in the country......

That basically sounds right. I'm about to play with this band only because
the word around town is that they're good people (and good players), and I'm
going bonkers without a band. But, I told them honestly, right up front,
that there's a disturbing sameness to the initial list of songs they sent
me. Furthermore, when I went to Napster to download the music, I noticed
something which may or may not be meaningful: Duplicates of many songs, one
saying "album mix" and the other saying "radio mix". I can't explain why
this sent up a red flag, but it did.

So far, we've come to an agreement that I've got to have a few decent
bluegrass songs in the list, so at least I'll be reminded of Doc Watson,
Earl Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs from time to time. So far, we've got "Roll In
My Sweet Baby's Arms", a song that can really rip if done right.

Country is much worse than rock, in that the "good" stuff rarely makes it
to
the radio or CMT. Rock may have the occasional groundswell indie band, but
the country machine is much more tightly structured.

These days, if you don't wear a black cowboy hat and sing about how you're
a
regular Joe who lives for the weekend and loves God and "Amurrica", you're
screwed.

I jammed with some guys.
Country band.
I knew some of the songs but not all of them.
Some I never heard before.
Most songs were 3 or 4 Major chords so it wasn't too hard to follow.
The songs I didn't know I just played a Major pentatonic scale.
I had no idea what I was doing.
I was just doing.
When we were through the leader said he liked my bass playing.
I never let on that I was lost half of the time.
Ya never know.

Sometimes sleight of hand works, I guess.

It seems I've been drafted by a country band, for lack of anything
else
good
to do around here at the moment. They keep telling me to "listen to
the
country station a lot". I've run out of fake excuses not to. At some
point,
I may have to tell them that the only country station here is the
worst
type
of top 40 commercial bullshit. And, on a regular basis, I'll hear "So,
Missy, whattyall wanna request?" The caller will usually sound like
an
11
year old girl with kleenex jammed in her nose.

Lotta great country music and players out there.....

Barry

Yeah...there are. I'll probably have to get familiar with it via online
radio. There's just one country station here. It is unlistenable.
