Was in line next to a teenager at the airport yesterday, wearing a "Dark

nervous
about flying, so I made some small talk with him, to try to take his
mind
off the fact our flight was delayed. So I asked, "So, is Dark Side your
favorite Pink Floyd album?"

His reply: "Who?"

He didn't know who they are, he just liked the graphic on the shirt. So
maybe not all of them actually know what they're "advertising."

My nephew is into early Pink Floyd these days, with Sid Barrett. Stuff I
never even listened to. Most of the kids I know love classic rock. Of
course, most of them play something too. Then again, if these kids are
playing school dances or for their friends, well, somebody else is
listening to it. I'm sure they don't want to play stuff that's going to
ruin their chances for a date:-)

Yeah, my experience with my own kids and their friends is along the same
lines. Of course they had lots of exposure listening to me play. Around
age 16-17 they all seemed to outgrow a lot of the current stuff and gain an
appreciation for the classics. Interestingly, the oldest son seems to be
the most resistant, and he's the one who does music production for a living!

My other son (the one living in VA) married into a family of Beatles nuts;
initially he seemed to be enjoying it, but I think after 3.5 years of
marriage he's showing signs of overdose :-) He does enjoy listening to (and
playing along with) Jimi, however.

The two daughters are big fans of the Doors and Queen, respectively.
They've been raised well!

But even back in high school days, all their friends seemed very
knowledgeable about classic and pre-classic rock. Many of them were
"grungers" and knew about the connection between that genre and the stuff
that inspired it.
