How many movie comedies have you seen that have a really funny
premise, but over the span of the whole movie there are only three
or four really funny bits and the rest is just treading water?
The writer had one good idea, and that's it.
I think Spinal Tap is one of them. Besides the basic premise, there
are a few other layers of interest, like the faux-documentary
structure, and the story of the breakup and reformation of the band.
Another parody movie I like a lot is "Waiting for Guffman". It's got
lots of great, funny characters, and a twist at the end that's
satisfying.
