John. At that age, most of the kids DON'T KNOW what they want with their life.
I didn't know either. Grew up in a family of electrical engineers and teachers. Upper-middle class. I only knew I wanted something different - not electronic not teaching. So, someone told me about psychology. Being overally talented for both humanistic and natural studies, I choose something in between - psychology. Finished that, and never ever worked as a phychologist.
Today, I'm so sorry I never got to study music. If someone could turn back time for me back to highschool, I would most probably play celo in some orchestra today.
But it's too late for me now. I have a family to support. Can't go back to highschool.
So, hell yeah! Push them if you see talent. Push them hard. Also tell them how hard it is to make it. Tell them that every 20th music major student gets to live a decent life filled with music and happiness.
If they bite, if they feel lucky... you know the rest.
Danko
