One of the ideas our soon-to-be former singer didn't like (but will be
put in place once he's gone) was my idea of Pull the Style from the
Hat.
We're sick of playing "Me and Bobbie McGee," but because we have a
female singer we get requests for it at nearly every gig. Once out of
bordom our drummer started it with a modified Bo Diddley beat, the
band went with it and it made the old war-horse interesting. That
gave me an idea.
We're going to write musical style onto guitar picks, have an audience
member choose a pick out of a hat, and do "Bobbie McGee" in that style
that night. Choices can be country, heavy metal, reggae, 50's R&R,
punk, disco, etc. The next gig odds are we'll be doing it in another
style. The drummer wants to rehearse each style, but I say run
through each once at the most to get a basic framework and take our
chances on stage - a great way to challenge the band.
Our out-going singer hates the idea because he thinks people only want
to hear songs done the way they're familiar with. (Zzzzzz....)
I think I would pay five dollars to hear a Hank Williams version of
Stairway To Heaven. I think it would have to be major key. I would
insist on yodelling. Gotta have that yodel. OK, ten dollars, but
that's my final offer.
