Not about wrong notes, I realize, just wrong intonation, but still ...

So, perfect pitch is not an asset in performance?

I dunno, but it's a really funny joke to the piano tuning world. ;-)
You
know it would take only a few minutes thought to realise how silly the
whole
concept is. When we last changed the pitch standard to 440 what happened
to
all the folks who had perfect pitch before? Quite a few instruments,
including pianos are not on "perfect pitch" except at a specified
reference
point. (generally A=440) There are several different tuning schemes in
use
today, which one is the one for folks with perfect pitch?/

Gerry

I agree Gerry, what with stretch tuning and everything.

I've been told by many I have perfect pitch. The truth of the matter is
that I carry around a note in my head that's usually within 5 cents or so
of
A = 440 (actually it's the octave below that's in my head but it's easy
enough to double it). My old piano teacher from elementary-school days
cultivated this in me, and more importantly, the ability to recognize
chords
of all types by ear. All this helps tremendously in being able to pick
off
various parts from recorded songs, but other than that, it's secondary to
a
lot of other things as far as being a good musician is concerned.

There's no such thing as "perfect" pitch. It's a matter of how close you
can hit it, there's always some error involved. Also, there's "perfect"
relative pitch, where a person has to be given a reference note in order
to
"get" the others correctly.

Absolutely agree. In fact, nearly all musicians have pretty good pitch and
certainly good relative pitch. It's the "perfect" thing that's a joke. My
dobro player, for instance, has excellent pitch sense - but without a
reference he will vary enough from one gig to another to cause a problem.
He still doesn't use a tuner, but he pulls a pitch off one of the other
instruments that is already tuned to a good electronic tuner for his basis.

Gerry

I will normally tune a guitar or bass in the absence of a tuner or any
reference pitch and come out almost right on. In fact, other people
normally tune to me despite never having a tuner around.

Just for kicks, after reading the last few messages, I decided to hum
what felt like an A and see what the tuner said. (I do own one, it
just stays in a box at home most of the time.) I was one LED sharp
over a perfect A.
