I wouldn't go by what it sounds like unplugged.
It is an electric bass.
Make sure the neck is straight.

certainly in his best interest to fix it. Otherwise no one is going to buy
it. It also may be that it isn't fixable. You often see pianos advertised
used with the statement "It just needs tuning". When you see that, run like
hell the other way. If it "just needed tuning" they'd have had it tuned
before they tried to sell it.
