Today he said he planned to stay through the end of the year but after
seeing the ads he feels like he should "clean out his desk."

I questioned why he's willing to stay six months if he's that
miserable in the band. I don't want the guy to leave, but he
obviously isn't into it anymore and can drop out at any time. Like
any "lame duck," I don't expect the kind of energetic performance out
of him that we got the last ten years.

Your thoughts? Anybody ever give you six months notice?

John, I don't have a lot of similar experience but what I wanted to say is
that people in these situations never seem to tell the truth. There is
probably some reason he is leaving, and it is very unlikely that it's the
reason he told you. Another thought that occurred to me is that he may
not want to leave at all. He may be looking for some stroking. I don't
profess to understand this sort of thing, but I've seen it many times and
now sort of adjust to it. Under any kind of stress it always seems that
the first thing people say isn't true. It probably isn't a lie, it just
isn't true. You can decide how much effort you want to expend in trying to
find out his real reasons. Is it worth the trouble, or not??

Gerry

Gerry may be on to something here - although maybe not necessarily stroking
that he's looking for so much as a round about way of holding the proverbial
gun to your head to turn thing around to his liking. I've come across this
often with employees that over-estimate their worth who go out and find a
job that pays more, then announce they are quitting.... but will stay if you
pay them more. None the less - it's a bad thing to play into that hand.
The fact that it upsets him that you've already made an effort to replace
him seems to support that. If he was sincere about leaving on good terms
and without interrupting your current schedule, this would not bother him in
the least. He does without doubt appear to be sending a lot of mixed
signals. Lemme guess - this guy also has a long history whining about life
in general, getting on the soapbox about this issue or that, then
completely changing his view a week or 2 later.
