One of the founding members of my ten year old cover band is leaving.
Among his reasons:
- He doesn't like that two members (including myself)play in a
separate original band.
- He doesn't like that everybody in the band is willing to play some
original songs in the cover band (but we don't actually play any).
- He prefers to play mainly typical cover band songs (think "Mustang
Sally") while we try to play well known but not worn out songs.

Anyway, he said he'd prefer to play out the remaining schedule but
wouldn't be upset if it didn't work out that way. The rest of the
band had a meeting and agreed to start looking for a replacement.
We'd been burned before by a departing member who said she'd stay
until we found a replacement but then announced that her next gig
would be her last (we had not found a replacement yet). Yesterday we
posted ads on various websites and have received dozens of
responses.

Today he said he planned to stay through the end of the year but after
seeing the ads he feels like he should "clean out his desk."

I questioned why he's willing to stay six months if he's that
miserable in the band. I don't want the guy to leave, but he
obviously isn't into it anymore and can drop out at any time. Like
any "lame duck," I don't expect the kind of energetic performance out
of him that we got the last ten years.

Your thoughts? Anybody ever give you six months notice?

One suggestion, ask him what it would take to make him stay with the band.
If he is unsatisfied, but not terminally so, he'll make some resaonable
suggestions that the you guys might be willing to go along with. Otherwise,
replace him as soon as possible and get it over with.
I'm not aware of anyone ever giving six months notice, sometimes they say
they'll stay until you find a replacement, but that rarely works out if it
takes longer than a couple of weeks. In my experience, when someone gives
notice, they're no longer interested in doing what it takes to do a proper
job, so it's best to replace them as soon as possible.
