Re: OT: More on Humidity

I used to live pretty near that area, and there used to be a little place -
I think between Falls Church and Annandale - that had live music every night
and the whole place didn't seat more than perhaps 50 people. I can't recall
the name of it, but it was something of an institution. Also, I used to
frequent Kate's Irish Pub which after it's last move was just north of the
mixing bowl. I can't remember the street name, but they had live music
every night also.

To get the discussion on topic, that kind of weather changes are
very
bad for music instruments. Specially acoustic ones. So dry in the
winter to get so humid in the summer...
The OT in the subject means "Off Topic" but that doesn't mean we
can't
go on
topic if we want.

Out here I do not use a humidifier on my acoustic instruments because
I
actually use them away from home. I'm worried about drastic changes
from
moist to dry.
I keep my basses in the living room on stands, easy access. But I know
that I need a truss rod tweak for my MTD and my SX has been easier to
play lately. Any advice on how to keep conditions nice around here so
that all my fussy toys (two basses and a computer) and I are happy?

I live in northern Virginia. The air today is as thick as peanut
butter.
At 10 PM, the weather service said it's 82 degrees but feels like 88.
And for you weather geeks, the relative humidity is 66% and the dew
point is 70. I didn't want to quote daytime figures. Come at your own
risk!
I'm thinking that I need to move to the beach. No sticky air, hot but
nice, with some ocean breezes, and I can't imagine anything that would
be more like a religious experience than playing my bass while the
ocean
is roaring behind me! So, I'm not religious, but...

Susan, where in NoVa? I'm in Silver Spring MD myself. My son, his
wife,
and their new baby live in Nokesville, just west of Manassas.

And you're right about the humidity, especially after being relatively
cool
and dry for several days. Life's been easier since I learned to do
simple
setups myself! My guitars seem to need more attention than my bass,
though.

Hi Rich,

I live in Falls Church, in the Merrifield area, and my day job (although
I'm looking for something else) is in DC. We're practically neighbors:)

Wish I knew how to do setups. I am a bit nervous about truss rod
adjustments. Messing around with the saddles doesn't bother me, but I'm
not likely to break anything doing that.

LOL, yeah, I recently got over that hump, though still a little nervous.
A
little nervous is healthy! If you're interested in getting into it,
there's
a couple of good books by Dan Erlewine, you can find them easily on
Amazon.com. They've gotten me past the "willies".

Do you have any gigs coming up? I'd come out.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm well past that now, mainly just playing and
putting together a handful of recordings for the enjoyment of family and
close friends. And trying to get a couple of internet-based musical
collaborations going. And trying some songwriting, "with a little help
from
my friends."

How about you, are you playing out these days?
