Re: OT: playing just for fun

Hi friends,

I've read the many threads about bar gigs, the business, bandmates
from hell, and such and I've found it all interesting. After a recent
visit to the group I started thinking again about how we seem to have
lost the point of it all. I'm sure sociology doctorates have been
written on the topic and I don't want to ramble on too long but it
seems to me that music was an activity engaged in with family and
friends *after* the hard work was done.
I know of course that things have changed - most of us don't need a
hoedown to relax after a month of reaping, threshing, or potato
pickin' but still I find that this romantic notion of getting together
with family or friends just to play for the fun of it is very
enticing.
This has led me in recent years to the kind of music that still has
that strong tradition although some ("pure" blugrass for example) are
too full of inane rules and demigods to be fun. So I've been spending
a great deal of time with bluegrass, mountain, old-time, and folk and
having a great time.
My family history would be full of this kind of tradition from almost
every side and as a kid our holiday get togethers usually had at least
a piano and guitar session.

then it just withered away.

So anyway, I'm just reflecting and wonder what others think of this.
Do have these kind of sessions? Did you ever? What took it all away
- beyond just a blanket statement of "the pace of life these days".
Can I blame the record companies? ;-)

In the end, 99.99995% of all musicians do it for fun. Very few get paid enough so that they can quit their day job.

I got a whole orchestra of 50 reasonable quality musicians, most of whom will never make a dime playing music. I played also in two amateur bands that do it "just for fun", and know of many others. And there are churches, community college groups, etc...

Don't assume that Usenet discussions exactly reflects real life. The fact that one reads/posts on the newsgroups automatically makes him/her a minority.
