Yes. £ 9 bn raised in tax revenues. Direct medical cost of cigarette
smoking is about a fifth of that. There are also productivity losses,
but on the other hand there's less pension to be paid out.

I haven't looked at the actual numbers, but a quick head-calculation

on what % of a cigarrete pack goes to taxes and a rough idea of the NHS
budget... makes me doubt very much that anyone can say the costs are
covered
by the taxes in cigarettes.

I was stupid enough to actually go by the numbers, rather than
plucking them at random out of the air. When will I ever learn?

the issue really isn't about the numbers... that's a sideline, a
distraction.

you claim that all is okay because whatever burden smoking causes to society
it's paid for by your taxes. rather than argue about the actual numbers, I
argue that the principle of what you're saying is wrong, that monetary costs
is a very narrowminded way to measure things like these.
