So I'm in the market for a preamp... possibly a modeling one, with
some built in effects.

My current amp is an SWR Redhead. I like how it sounds. I don't
like the reliability... so when it dies (shortly I fear) I will
be replacing it with a preamp + power amp combo.

What I'd like:

Something capable of a relatively similar sound - this is for
live work, in a crappy bar band, so we aren't talking pristine
studio quality sound necessary.

Some built in effects would be nice - really just a compressor
and distortion - so I don't have to have any pedals.

Mutliple outputs so I can feed the board and the power amp, and
preferrably either a built in tuner or an extra output to feed my
electric tuner.

Cheap, cheap, cheap... or at least inexpensive, so please don't
suggest any $1000 preamps...

So what does everyone recommend? Behringer V-Amp? One of the Boss
effect/preamp units? Line6? Toneworks?

You're worried about the reliability of your redhead?

Yeah... because it has some sort of flaky/intermittent
issue where it loses about 75% of the volume and goes all
distorted - it's been in 3 or 4 times over the years and no
one seems to be able to track it down. Sometimes it goes
months without happening, other times it pops up regularly...

Temperature cycling and movement seem to trigger it, so it's
probably a cold solder joint somewhere.

...but I can't say I really trust it at this point.

Additionally, IMHO, I wouldn't use a modeling head. You're used to
real tone, you might be seduced at first, but sometime down the line
you'll realize you have more sizzle than steak.

Well, I'd really like an Alembic F-2B, but that is WAY out of my price
range.

Also IMHO, compression built in to preamps generally aren't ready for
prime time. There's so many quality options for outboard compression
that I wouldn't make a tacked on/built in compression criteria for
purchasing a new preamp/head. The FMR RNC is highly rated by all. I
use what I consider a "sleeper" ; the ART levelar ...

It certainly isn't a necessary, but I'd like to stay away from having
a bunch of pedals.

Ahh that's too bad about the redhead. The intermittent thing will
surely drive yah nuts.

My apologies, it seems to me I typed up my reply before I read your
whole post, so a bunch of what I said wasn't pertinent...

So still in that mode, I have a F 1-X I'm going to sell ...
