Thanks for the tip Susan.

You're welcome:)

I am currently trying to figure out how to deal with Windoze. All my
windoze stuff is 2000 (except for laptop which is XP). 2000 is fairly
reasonable though support is about to vanish. Soon I fear it will be
history.

I think support for Windows 2000 has already ended. I actually liked Windows 2000, it was the best thing MSFT has ever done.

I was actually going to do a dual boot, with Windows 2000 on one hard drive and Linux on another, but Win2K had problems with my big SATA harddrive. There was a work around, but it was a pain (more than anyone probably wants to know) especially since I didn't want Windows to use that drive anyway. So, I just ix-nayed Windows.

<snip>

So the plan is to go Linux. I've been trying Distros.

<snip>

Tried Ubuntu. Got the disk right here. VERY nice program. I like Gnome
better than KDE on screen. Mouse and keys VERY responsive.

You'll be pleased to know that 64 Studio uses Gnome as the default desktop. There are some KDE apps that I like (K3B for ripping and burning CDs), but you can always run them under Gnome (and vice-versa).

<snip>

And
programs to install must be hunted down and loaded manually. Which is
why Linspire is cool if you want to hunt down and try a bunch of Linux
aps. Also users rate them which is a nice hint too.

That's one of the problems with Linux, there are sooooo many apps, and unfortunately, not enough documentation. I usually just get opinions from friends, or experiment when I'm in the mood.

I've never tried Linspire or Red Hat. I'm running into Ubuntu fans a lot. The main thing with Ubuntu or other derivatives of Debian is that Debian was a good integration project, all the software works together, and when you install a new program, it makes sure that you have everything you need to make it work. 64 Studio is a remix of Debian. It comes with a nice set of programs, but you can get anything else you want from Debian.

There are more distros and I'm trying them one by one. I'm hopin that
things have advanced to the point that when Bill finally pulls the
plug on reasonable windoze, I'll have a workable alternative.

I like having choices too. Plus, the bogus story of Bill Gates being a whiz kid in a garage makes me sick. His mom was a big shot at IBM, that's where he got his break. I like to use the stock trader symbol instead. It's hard to hate Bill Gates. MSFT is a lot more impersonal, and that's how it really is.

The guy who heads the project is a bass player, which I think is a point
in its favor:-)

Hey, I'm trying THIS one right away!

They have a nice mailing list for testers, which means anyone using the software. Daniel James seems like a really nice guy and he just wants the software to work for creative people. He's also got a user forum and has been trying to put documentation up there. It is a work in progress, but there are some very dedicated and friendly people there.

I see that Ardour (one of the main apps) has just gotten sponsorship from the audio engineering school, SAE Institute. I don't know anything about them, but maybe that means something to someone here. Ardour runs on Linux and Mac.

To me, it's nice to have choices. There's a philosophy I believe in behind it all, but that's way off topic for this group.

Meanwhile, for those who think this is evangelism, *don't* install Linux (or anything else) unless you want to! It's your computer, nobody should be telling you what to do with it, unless you are paying them to!

Thanks again Susan.

Let me know how it goes. Email me if you have any questions.

Benj

Take care,

-Susan
