Talcum Powder was always the answer....

You want to know what I want to know? Here's what I want to know:
Pronounce the word "vaseline." Now pronounce the word "baseline." Which
one is wrong? That's what I want to know.

Learning English makes you smarter:

Vaseline - 1872, trademark for an ointment made from petroleum and
marketed by Chesebrough Manufacturing Co., coined from Ger. Wasser "water"
(w=v sound) + Gk. elaion "oil" + scientific-sounded ending -ine. Robert A.
Chesebrough was of the opinion that petroleum was a product of the
underground decomposition of water. This makes the pronunciation obvious.

Baseline - Compound word from base and line. Base is from the Greek
"basis" (foundation). Line is derived from lineus (long i as in lineus)
meaning linen/flax string.

Now, how about a new English speaker trying to start a life here. They
have to rent a place, right? What do they pay the landlord? Rent. What
does the landlord do? He rents a place to people. So, the renter rents a
place by paying rent to a landlord who is the one renting out his rental.

But he doesn't really pay rent, he pays money. For that, he needs a job.
He tries to find a job, but all he sees are signs from business that want
some help. "I'm the one who needs help," he thinks. "These people have
businesses already. They don't need help. They should give me a job."

And when he gets paid, he gets paid by check, then he has to go to the
bank to check and see if the check is good. If it is good then he cashes it
and gets money for it. Then when he goes to a restaurant, he gets a check,
for which he has to pay money (unless he pays by check). If he is a hockey
player, he may get his pay check for checking the players on the other team.
In that case, he throws a check on another player, but that player neither
pays him nor collects money from him for that check. If you don't believe
this, you can check for yourself, but you won't get money for that check
either.
