Heating the pickups for wax potting is usually done in a small oven, you
heat them slowly, so that the whole pickup reaches an even temperature,
too hot and you damage the insulation on the coil windings or melt the
plastic parts, too cold and the wax won't wick into the coils, same
problems if there are any hot or cool spots in the pickup.
No, it's not done in a "small oven." It's done in a -- are you ready for
this? -- pot. Imagine, you pot pickups in a pot! Lordy land o' Goshen!
You take your pickup, and you dangle the sumbitch into a pot of melted
wax, let it sit until it heats evenly and the wax penetrates, and then you
pull the motherlover out. It cools, it's potted.
Sorry, another alzheimer's moment. I knew that, in fact the music store I
worked at those many years ago had a wax potting pickup pot. I've only done
a couple with wax since then and I used an oven to heat the pickup then
poured melted wax into it. It works that way too, at least it cured the
pickup's microphonics, and cleaning up the pickup wasn't necessary. A friend
told me about the super glue potting method, and that's the way I've done
ever since. It's easier, quicker and works very well. I know of at least one
guitar done with superglue many years ago and it's still not microphonic. I
did one of mine a couple of years ago and it's still working fine.
