and highlighted the two notations we are wondering about. It's a
piece called "R U Chicken" if that helps at all...

The first one (at bar 50) seems to indicate perhaps eigth notes,
but that doesn't seem to make sense when the preceeding bars are
more intense than playing simple eighth notes...

The second one (at bar 88) could indicate a rest for 2-1/2 beats?
But that seems like a useless indication as there is already a
rest indicator in the music itself...

Those numbers aren't anything standard that I've ever seen.

I'm thinking that the (8) is just a reminder that it's the end of an 8-
bar phrase, which occurs twice.

The "-2 1/2" maybe is just restating the length of the rest below it.

I wonder if these aren't somebody's personal notations on the master
score that got accidentally transcribed to the part by the copyist?
