One of the nicest basses I have had was a Mosrite from the 60's with a
padded back.
I like the original Steinbergers.
Kramer aluminum neck bass.
Original Gibson EB0.

I could probably buy almost any affordable bass out there.
But I play an Olp.
I love the thing.
Reminds me of an old Fender bass with better sound.
I had a 77 Fender Jazz that I hated.
It was very pretty with maple and inlays but it was loaded with dead
spots.
I have had fretless's and basses with more strings than 4 but I sill
like a 4 string, fretted, passive bass best.
It seems weird, even to me, that I hooked on my Olp.
Maybe someday I'll move up to a Squire. :)
