Cutting back the master and turning up the bass isn't likely to help because at lower frequencies, that isn't going to change the amp's power output. It's about the same as leaving volume and bass the same and turning down the mid and treble.
Once again I've learn't sumptin'. I would have thought that a higher gain input signal might cause the amp to do less work to get the output level and hence perhaps cut down on the heat generated.

Nope, relative gain ratio has nothing to do with output power in an amp. You can drive it with a one volt signal or with a one hundred volt signal, but the amp supplies all the output power in either case, so as long as the output power is the same, input level makes no difference at all.

ok I'll go with it since I lack the background to counter. It seems a bit counter intuititive. So if I had an amplifier with a fixed output, it would always put out the same volume regardless of what the input signal strength? Likewise if I set my preamp gain and output levels and never change them only increase or decrease the volume at he bass? This either can't be or we're on different pages. Because I know I can affect my output volume by using a volume pedal to adjust the input to the amp.... What am I missing? Aren't output volume and power somehow related? I'm just trying to wrap my mind around this one....
