Re: New G-K 1001RB-II Going Thermal and Cutting Out........

Hi, Guys....

Long time since I've posted here. Got a new rig yesterday, a Gallien-
Krueger 1001RB-II, with a G-K 410SBX cab. This is my first head/cab
rig, having used a combo for several years.

Since this is my first high-power rig, I need a reality check from you
guys. My new amp went into thermal overload protection mode (audio
shutdown) when playing at bone-crushing volume. The amp shut down
like this several times at 80% power on the woofer/master knob, and
75& power on the input volume knob.

The bass is an Ibanez SRX700, strung BEAD; the active pickups on this
bass are very, very hot.

My new amp cut out when playing the B string, at high volume. I never
saw the pre-amp clipping l.e.d. come on at all, and the bass was
turned up just under half-way.

The amp was Speakon plugged into the new GK 410 cab and also a
Behringer 115 cab. This rig was wall-breaking loud, but it did in
fact cut out while playing.

The 410 cab is rated @ 400 watts power handling @ 8 ohms, the 115 cab
is 600 watts power handling @ 8 ohms. Perhaps the power output of this
amp is too close to the power handling limits of the cabs?

Guys, is it normal for the 1001RB-II to fritz out at this volume
level, or is something wrong here?

Are my expectations too high for this 750-watt amp, or do I have an
electronic problem? Right now I gotta go replace the windows my new
rig cracked yesterday.......

Your opinions and input are eagerly anticipated.......

Thanks,

Mark

If you have time to do a search at groups.google.com you may find that this amp has issues with the thermal protection circuit.... I have seen past threads regarding this issue with G&K but can't be sure of the model. Is this amp new or used? I'm fairly certain it was older amps but you never know.... Aside from that, are the vents clear? Is the amp rated to 4 0hms? It is true that when it runs into 4 ohms it's working harder than when working to an 8 ohm impedance.
My gut says drive the amp at lower power and use more volume at the bass... You may also have a problem with one of the cabs such that it is drawing more power than you think and hence overloading the amp.
