Hi all,

I'm looking to get a bigger amp from what I have now, which is a 50 watt
12 inch speaker Crate amp that I've had for about 10 years. I've used
this amp at home just to practice and it's okay for that, but I want to
get something the next size up with a bit better sound. I don't want to
spend a lot of money for what I'm going to get, maybe in the $300 range
or so. I just was wondering if there were any recommendations of what to
look for or even what to avoid? Maybe this is too broad of a question
but I'll give it a shot.

Carvin amps are great, solid performers and available direct from the
manufacturer, saving you lots of money. And there is a money back
grace period if you find you don't like it.

Ashdown amps are okay. I'm not all that impressed by them. I bought
one for a church a while back because that was all their budget would
allow. It performs well enough for what they need. But I DI'd the bass
into the board, making the amp more a stage monitor than a 'main amp'
arrangement.

The best thing you can do is go into the store where you live and tell
the sales guy you are shopping and need to test amps. Bring your bass,
do not use an off the wall bass, use your bass to test them. This will
show the sales guy/girl you are serious and eventually will buy.

Test everything you can within your price range and a little above.
Dicker over the price. Higher priced amps can be had for less than the
price tag. Choose the one that suits you. If it's a little more
expensive, save your money and buy that amp. Do not go cheap on
yourself. The amp you currently have will do until you can afford the
amp you really want. That's the key: buy the amp you really want! You
will not regret it. Even if it takes a little longer to save the money
for it (do not buy on credit or on 90 days same as or on time
payments!!), it will be worth the wait.

Hope this helps.
