Also add "Black night" by Deep Purple for usage of those box patterns and
when to play unison with the guitar and how to fill the common rock song.

I love Deep Purple. Don't know if anyone would consider this a must
learn, but I just learned "Space Truckin'," which was fun. Had the box
patterns, but there was a fair amount of shifting one or more frets,
also little walks up four frets on one string, and a little descending
blues scale run. A few hammer on's. Lots of places where you play on the
"and" of the beat but the guitar is playing on the beat. And other
places where you are in unison with either the guitar or the keys. And
places where you just rest for a few bars and better be ready to come in
on time!
It's not likely something that I'd put in a setlist, but it's fun to
play, well I love learning songs on my own, outside of my lesson material:-)
One of the first songs I learned, Steve Miller's "The Joker," is a good
example of a song based on a major scale. (That's one of the things I
love about my teacher, he brings music theory to life, starting from the
simplest concepts.)
Would love to see more ideas in this thread.
Take care,
