What a fascinating viewpoint! I'd love to know where you got that
information. I know, for instance, that 13% of Americans fall below the
poverty line, but of those below the poverty line 46% own their own homes
and it averages 3 bedroom.

You "know" this? Sure ya do! While I hold the specifics of your numbers in
dispute (especially the three bedroom part), one of the reasons for seeing
home ownership among those below the poverty line is that a high percentage
of the elderly in that income bracket own their owns, many without a
mortgage.

Should that change the definition of poverty? Sure, but the dispute is how
much so. Presumably if you've paid off your mortgage and now have a low
income, chances are your home is older and therefore in need of more
repairs. It's value will probably be higher and thus higher property taxes.
Conceivably you could rent out your place and live elsewhere cheaper, so
that is a potential source of income, though minimal. If you have a
mortgage, that's not really an option.

For an interesting and detailed perspective on this issue, check out
http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/papers/!homeown.pdf. Perhaps then you won't be
so quick to scoff at the idea of being below the poverty level yet owning a
home.
