Three weeks ago, we had a small group of musicians (tuba, trumpet, trombone
and one or two others) play their way through our offices at work.
Christmas caroling. As they finished a song, and were strolling away from
my cubicle, I mumbled "Play Freebird!" (quietly), and one of them shot me
the most evil look. :-)

So....is " Free Bird" so bad after all?
I think in the world of bar bands "Freebird" is the most underplayed
"overplayed song" there is. I remember last spring arguing with my
bandmates over song selection. For research I hit about 20 websites of
bands who work regularly in Phoenix. I think just one had "Freebird" on
their song lists. I've never had a gig where somebody didn't shout it out,
even as just a joke. I can't remember the last time I heard a band do it
live.
I'm an admitted whore when it comes to song selection. I don't think
people come out to see me play the stuff *I* like. They want to hear the
stuff *they* like, and I just happen to be there playing it (hopefully
very well). I get far more enjoyment watching the dance floor fill to
standing room only for "Play That Funky Music" than I do having people
politely applaud from their seats when we finish "The One I Love".
Like Shaughnessy once said, whatever the song is, play it like it's the
best song in the world.
