"Putting on a show" is an attitude indigenous to certain styles, not
others. If it were a necessary component of all music in order to fill
the house, why would anybody buy a ticket to a symphony orchestra
performance? A bunch of musicians sitting relatively still, sometimes
swaying, one person with his back to the audience waving his hands. A
lot of jazz performers also "statuesque". Yet, it's not solely about
the music either. It's complex. There's something in the air at a live
performance (and I'm not talking about what was in the air at a
Grateful Dead gig). Something about the "community" experience. All we
can do is speculate, and be thankful that listeners support live
music...when they do, and hope it never stops!
