Almost exactly right. When it was invented (only a few hundred years
ago), it was used to emphasize (double, an octave down) the lowest
voice in the orchestra, generally the 'cello. Then it's independent
possibilities began to become obvious. While it still often simply
doubles another line, it also often has it's own voice, it's own
contribution. Listen to Beethoven's early symphonies vs. later ones and
hear the difference. (Dominico Dragonetti, the first DB virtuoso played
for Ludwig. That experience changed the way he, Ludwig, viewed the
instrument forever.)
