Effects loop is not that great a choice. Since most don't have a separate
volume control, it's hard to adjust levels. Plus you have little or no
independent control over EQ, and the signal is often not as loud (don't ask
me the technical whys of this).
I either run 2 separate amps, or run the synth into the second channel of
one amp (providing you can get 2 at once).
Since the synth output is "line level" you can get away with using a much
smaller amp for the synth. For example, I run a 200W bass head about
halfway, but I use a 40W amp for the synth, about 1/3 of the way up.
The key is to balance the synth patches to your bass rig, so you can drift
seamlessly between the 2. You can also use a volume pedal on the bass amp to
clamp down on or boost louder synth patches in a hurry.
If you are REALLY strapped for cash, you can try an A/B/Both Box into one
channel of your bass amp.
Thanks. I was just wondering what other MIDI Bass people were doing.
Part of it is philosophical--am I playing bass with a really advanced
effect system, or am I a bass player *and* a synthesist? Part of it is
economics and part of it is practical, i.e. with a separate rig, I
could do stereo synth.
However, all that being said. Based on the weight of my Kurzweil,
that V-Bass system is looking more attractive every day.
