I dunno, I used to own a Peavey Unity (unfinished koa neck-thru w/
purpleheart stringers & rosewood fingerboard) that I had de-fretted by
the guys at 48th Street Custom Guitars. Total cost of the bass + the
de-fretting was $700, and I have *never* seen a bass for less than
twice that price come close to playing or sounding as good. I still
kick myself for selling it.

I'll agree you probably don't want to do a de-fretting by yourself
unless you're an accomplished craftsman. But it's not at all a given
that to de-fret a good sounding bass takes more time or costs more
money than to find a good-sounding fretless bass.
