i'm no country music afficionado by any stretch, but my band has been asked
to play at a tribute night to johnny cash & hank williams as a fund raiser
for a local community radio station. we'll probably be doing about 3 songs,
considering there's a fairly substantial lineup already keen to get up &
rehash (& probably in some cases, re-hack) johnny & hank's songs. What i'm
after is a few relatively unknown examples of their work - no doubt there'll
be five renditions of "walk the line", "hey good lookin'" & "ring of fire",
so does anyone out there know any good hank 'n' cash songs we could throw
together? if they'd work in a rockabilly context, it would be even better ;)
My all-time favorite Johnny Cash song is "I Still Miss Someone." Perfect example of the way that country, rock 'n' roll and pop blended in the '50s, it's just got that feel.
Please do the tribute songs straight, not campy. It might not happen down there, but around here a lot of bands seem to think it's funny to do "Ring of Fire" et al. as a kind of a joke. Not funny.
