My auto-save is set to save every two minutes, but there was nothing
there. Searched all the temp folders and the auto-save location
folder -- nothing. A half-day's work was irretrievably lost. Poof.
That's the odd thing to me. You sure you hadn't saved the file? If
you had and hte save was current, then the app could go down
gracefully and wouldn't have prompted.
Word *always* creates a temp file that handles the work you're doing.
The original file isn't touched until you manually do ctrl-S or close
the doc and save changes. So, that temp file is what you're looking
for. It usually starts with ~$| or something like that.
Turn on the view for hidden and system files (Tools > Options > etc)
Do a search for all files created since yesterday. (Windows key+F, Find
files, then select When was it modified)
Cross your fingers.
Another wrinkle is that in the recent past, there were some pretty
major office updates. Dunno if those might've gotten auto installed
and somehow cleaned out the autosave cache. :-\
Anything is possible, but I've never seen nor heard of any MS update
dumping a file like this. Usually the updater gets all hung up on the
open doc.And FWIW, I'm doing tons of work on the same setup, O2k and
Win XP. It's a reliable setup, usually.
