There's no good reason to have active onboard crap on yer bass. Your
amp has a pre-amp in it right? Same damn thing without the batteries.
And I'm not buying the driving the signal down a long cable story
either....use a shorter cable or if you need that much mobility go
wireless. At least the batteries are doing something obviously
necessary in a wireless transmitter.
Before you go around calling active electronics "crap" consider which
bassists use (or have used) them:
Stanley Clarke
Tom Fowler
John Paul Jones
Louis Johnson
Cliff Burton
Rodney "Skeet" Curtis
and Flea...
I think John Entwistle did for a bit too..
{yawn}
Why should I give a rat's ass what those guys did. Just because a
player plays well doesn't mean he has the ability to make sound
technical judgement about equipment. As Anthony Jackson pointed out
some years ago in a wonderful column in BP bassists have a well earned
reputation for not knowing shit about the gear they use. All those
guys come from the era where active electronics were new and exciting
and they were willing to experiment.......the novelty though has worn
off. Why would you use a crappy little battery powered preamp when
you've got a perfectly good one in yer amp? If you have a good reason
to fine but most people don't and can't even really give a good reason
why they put one onboard their instrument. Check I said MOST people.
If you get a good sound with 'em bully for you. For me they're
unnecessary crap I gotta feed with batteries that I have to beg from
the audio guys or (perish the thought) actually buy. Perhaps you'd
like to hear my "the sound is in yer hands, not yer gear" spiel? I'd
be happy to batter you into a glassy eyed stupor with it.
