Couldn't you just unplug the battery, and plug it back, but only the
positive circle clip thingy, then put the meter from the neg on the batt,
and the other VOM lead to the neg/empty 1/2 of the battery clip?

This is what I would do. But the multimeter in-line with the battery.

The switch the multimeter into ammeter mode and measure what leakage
current is being drawn, and then start diddling with things to make
that reading get smaller.

That's what I'd do, too. You'll need solid connections to the battery
posts, like alligator clips. Start with the bass (supposedly) off. If
the reading is zero, then do all the poking with the bass "on." Look at
(poke at) the parts that are supposed to move; pots, the jack contacts,
and whatever else. Use a plastic tool of some sort, or even a toothpick
will do.

Then start wiggling the leads that attach to the jacks and the circuit
boards. If nothing ever changes, you might have an electrical problem.

On some meters, there are different jacks for the probes when using it
in ammeter mode vs ohmmeter or volt meter modes.

Take your time here. The fastest way to pop the fuse in your meter is
have the leads in the amps jack and then try to read the battery
voltage.

John, your question about grounds is hard to answer. The shielding, the
conductive paint, the circuit grounds for the boards, the sleeve on the
jack...all should be connected to the same short-as-possible wire.
Theoretically. The reality may be something entirely different.
