thinkin' about a 6....

I built a fretless Warmouth 6 about fifteen years ago and didn't play
it much and eventually sold it without really exploring the
possibilities. Yesterday I made an increasingly rare trip to a music
store to buy strings for the Jerry Jones (I change 'em every year or
so). Being Saturday I had to wait to for service and while I waited I
played an Ibanez 6 that felt pretty good and ended up playing all the
6's they had...a couple more Ibanezes and three Warwicks.

It's been a couple of years since I did a paying gig and my playing is
moving more towards solo jazz standards. I've wanted to be able to
play chords more easily and last winter with that in mind I ordered a
Stick. It hasn't even gone to production yet and in retrospect I'm not
all that interested anymore and am gonna cancel it. The 6 string bass
though is something I hadn't given any real consideration to but I
might just make a trip down to Bass NW in Seattle to do some serious
shopping.

Part of me says it's a weenie thing and I should maintain the
semi-monogamous commitment I have to my beautiful Azola Deco and work
on chords on it...that THAT'S my voice. Part of me says a broader
range of notes and frets would be a practical advantage and that I
should get the gear I want now while the money hose is spraying full
force. Another part of me says that for what the 6 I'd buy would cost
I could live without doing the day job and practice and write for
several weeks.....
I just dunno.
