OK, so we've been cocktailing a bit here, my guitarist & I, and we're
pondering deep musical questions.
1) What's the range of scale lengths on typical upright basses? Not some
custom-made oddity built by elves for Stanley Clark, but basses you're
actually likely to run into.
Usually somewhere between 40" and 42" for 'full sized' basses - note
most upright basses are actually 3/4 size - but 7/8 and 4/4 basses
mostly just have larger bodies.
2) We (in our infinite wisdom) believe uprights sound so different from
electrics not just because of their large internal cavity, but also because
of scale length.
This is true and demonstrated by many electric upright basses with scale
lengths in the 40"+ range. There's more to it than just scale length,
but longer does, in general, equate to more tone.
With this in mind, does anyone make electric basses (the
kind you hang on your shoulders) with scales longer than 34" or 35"?
Overwater and Fodera make 36" basses, there's a Dingwall Voodoo at 37"
If I'm reading the page right (they contradict themselves) Moses make a
42 inch scale 'vertical jump bass' which can be played vertically or
horizontally.
Please show your work in the margin.
I'm afraid there's a vodka stain in the margin - but as I make my own
vodka so it counts as my own work.
