Jim:
You bring up a good point regarding "how loud". Another
point to evaluate when you see response specs like the
ones you posted is how rolled off or how much variation
is tolerated in the spec numbers. In other words
depending on how they measure, the same cabinet can
have multiple specs. 35-3K Hz plus or minus how many
dB? Most of the time it means plus or minus three dB
SPL from the sensitivity at 1Khz, but without
mentioning this there is no safe assumption. Marketing
people are the OJT for politicians. In other words
Marketing types lie their asses off.
Also lets not forget what is almost more responsible
for the low end than the player, bass and amp combined.
The room the rig and listener is in and their positions
relative to the room.

: Headphones can produce those low frequencies. Hell,
a metal wire properly
: stretched and fastened can produce those low
frequencies. But how loud can
: it go? What's the frequency response curve? A lot
goes into the design of a
: speaker and cabinet. Entire books have been written
on the subject.
:
: So, can a 4 X 10" cabinet produce some really low
lows? Sure, if it's
: designed that way. Can a 1 X 15" produce some highs?
Sure, if it's designed
: that way. Here are the published specs on some Hartke
XL series and Ampeg
: cabinets. The numbers in parentheses are the
sensitivty ratings (1W@1M)
:
: 1 X 18
: Ampeg: 35Hz - 2kHz (97db)
:
: 1 X 15
: Ampeg: 50Hz - 3kHz (98dB)
: Hartke: 30Hz - 2.5kHz (98dB)
:
: 2 X 15
: Ampeg: 45Hz - 3kHz (100dB)
: Hartke: 30Hz - 1kHz (99dB)
:
: 2 X 10
: Hartke: 50Hz - 5kHz (96dB)
:
: 2 X 10 plus compression driver
: Ampeg: 50Hz - 18kHz (97dB)
: Hartke: 35Hz - 12kHz (99dB)
:
: 4 X 10
: Hartke: 30Hz - 5kHz (98dB)
:
: 4 X 10 plus compression driver
: Ampeg: 48Hz - 18kHz (98dB)
: Hartke: 30Hz - 12kHz (99dB)
:
: 8 X 10
: Ampeg: 58Hz - 5kHz (100dB)
: Hartke: 40Hz - 5kHz (100dB)
:
: The power handling seems comparable between the two
with a slight edge to
: the Ampeg. Interestingly, Hartke does not list the
frequency response or
: sensitivity for their paper cone cabinets. The specs
on the Transporter
: cabinets (less expensive versions) have lower
sensitivity and narrower
: frequency response.
:
: The point of this is not a comparison of Ampeg and
Hartke - I think both are
: of very good quality but with different sounds. The
point is that you really
: have to look at the specs and not just how big or how
many speakers there
: are.
