Ok, here's my story.
I haul out the big rig for the show, expecting a big ball room, only to
discover that my gear has more watts than the P.A. and is larger than the
stage.
Soundcheck went fast, but when it was time to play everything changed.
My monitor was squeeling before I even got to the stage, the singers mic
wasn't on, and the kick drum mic was feeding back creating a low howl.
We were reassured that "nothing had changed" so it must be us.
My monitor was off for the whole last set. When I mentioned it to the
soundguy, "he said I'm standing right there, you could let me know"
I told him that I don't grab a mic in the middle of a show to mention that
my monitor isn't working. I tried to get his attention, and when that
failed, oh well, I keep playing with or without.
The customers dined on Prime rib, a seafood buffet and a chocolate buffet.
They stuck us in a board room (where they told all the staff to take their
breaks) and fed us some sort of turkey and cabbage rolls.
Turkey before a gig...yawn
When we asked for some drinks (as per the rider) they brought us 4 bottles
of beer.
We had a great crowd that danced all night and never complained about
volume!!
The sound continued to change throughout the evening, and anytime I heard
something weird I looked up to see the soundguy screwing with the board.
At one point, my bass got so loud that it was feeding back in the PA, and I
looked up to see the soundguy's wife manning the board!!
The countdown was great. None of us had a watch, and we were expecting the
people in charge to cue us for the countdown.
Well, no one cued us, so we stopped somewhere around midnight and started to
count down from 10.
It was then that we realized that we don't know Auld Lang Syne, so I played
it solo with the drummer adding to it.
I got to hang out with Jim Byrnes most of the night, and we got him up for
the encore. I also got the scoop on the next Highlander movie.
I went back to my room, watched Pulp Fiction and drank a bottle of
champagne.
Lots of stories and jokes, and overall not a bad night, although I'm still
waiting to get paid.
