Buy a nice fretless neck, install it, play it, enjoy it.
When you get sick of it, bolt the fretted neck back on.
This is the best advice. If you end liking the fretless thing, and want
your first bass back, just buy the rest of the hardware you need, and
presto you've got two basses, and not a single ruined neck in sight.
Now for the fretless thing, be brave and skip the lines, there's
something very aesthetically pleasing about a pure unmarked slab of
neck wood. Ebony is a good choice. In the final run, you'll have to
play with your ears and not your eyes to be in tune anyways.
Along these lines, no pun intended, I have considered ordering a
Warmoth neck on occasion , and have always been impressed how they will
charge extra for an unlined neck.... Somehow it's more work, quite
unfathomable to me.
