You are right.
Some Godin electric guitar with acoustic pickup has a separate XLR output for the acoustic sound. Wouldn`t it be cool to have the same thing for a bass?
Build a DI box into the bass? - or simply plug it into one?.
Or, for an active bass, simply wire an XLR to the output - the lack of proper balancing will make no appreciable difference, particularly with the far higher signal level. You could use a trick like
http://sound.westhost.com/project87.htm under "Hey! That's Cheating" to make it more 'balanced'.
