What if there is no video rental store for miles and miles, does that mean
it's okay for you to duplicate movies and hand them out to your friends?
Availability is an interesting issue in copyright though, the earliest
copyright law I've seen was from Elizabethean England I think, and it said
that if the copyright holder doesn't exploit the copyrighted material then
he loses his rights to it. So if there is no *** music available anywhere
for a song, writing it out yourself is understandable, but in effect
publishing it by giving it to other people still means whoever owns the
copyright didn't get paid, and that's central to the whole discussion.
Doesn't mean virtually all of us haven't done it of course.

The guitar teachers I know guard themselves against exactly that actually,
in some cases going so far as to hand out blank tab sheets and have the kids
copy tab off a blackboard, all in the name of not getting the music school
into legal hot water. Hey, I'm not saying that over-the-top copyright
enforcement isn't silly, but it seems to me that a lot of the arguments
against it amount to side-stepping reality, somebody owns that music and you
can't duplicate it on CD or on paper or online without paying them, that's
the way it works. "But I wanna do it" doesn't change the law. And when it
comes to things that make me angry on this issue, Sony deciding they can
screw up our computers with copyright protection software on their CDs is a
way, way bigger matter to me, not to mention the music industry looking for
legal protection to invade consumers' computers looking for copyright
violation, that makes the *** music industry shutting down tab/lyrics
websites look pale.
