You need to run MS Update & then relax the security settings on the XP (SP2) firewall. Sorry I don't have a copy of XP to use to walk you through it. Outlook Express has worked well for me as an email appliance & for Usenet. FWIW, I now use Thunderbird. It's written for Linux & available for M$ WinXP.I've had it with XP as far as internet usage goes. XP Pro (yes; a legal one) for some reason won't allow me to post to Newsgroups or send emails. I've reinstalled it twice. I've been through all the security settings which common sense tells me could affect it. It does the same with Outlook AND Outlook express.
It just plain refuses to open some web pages. It's slow as a wet week (although reinstalling helped this a bit). Doesn't matter what browser I use; Firefox acts the same as IE.
Although I've started messing with Linux, I can't find a Linux version which has a simple, idiot-proof procedure for creating a new account and connecting to my ISP (they all seem to require that I configure a script - c'mon guys, it's the year 2005. I don't bone-up in anticipation of screwing around with my 'puter, I just want to go on the 'net fer chrissakes!).
I'm now thinking I'll buy an old (G3 or G4) Mac purely for 'net use; they can be got for next to nothing around here and appear to have enough spec for this use.
Anybody got any thoughts or advice?
