I am not complaining, but I personnaly went through 5 years of music
theory at school. I will probably never tell him about his lack of
musical communication skills. Because he is a good player, with much
more experience than me. I am learning a lot from him.
What I call a musical communication skill can be as simple as naming
chords. Let`s say the song has a CM7. It would become a C with B.
Then C with B without E but D added... and so on. Then, the singer ask
to raise the song by 1 (Karaoke background meaning a step). In my
head, the song will start with a DbM7. I am still very surprised to
hear the guitarist playing a C# with an C. Second chord: C# with C
without F but Eb added... Then move this situation into a jamming
context; I simply cannot follow him.
I understand that it can set me into a closed box and that I am limited
in my playing, but I find it much more convenient to communicate with
someone speaking the same language than me.
I won`t talk about the drummer that doesn`t know that he can start
playing at other places than the first beat...
By the way, English is my second language. I probably included a lot
of English mistakes in this post. But I know enough to get me
understood.
Why don`t I complain directly to him? My music theory is good, but my
bass playing sucks...
Fred.
