Proprietary format which will only work with iTunes or an iPod.
I just found out Napster has .99 song downloads and entire CDs for under 7 bucks, but it uses the Microsoft DRM stuff in Media Player. Format is mp3. Not sure what problems the DRM creates.
I've yet to try this, but I'm suspecting it causes very little trouble on a machine running, say Win 98 with an open source ripper, such as Audacity. ;-) If someone knows different, it'll save me some experimentation.

I'd like whatever format I end up with to be playable in my car. Not sure if it'll handle mp3. Time for a little experiment.....
It'll be a non-issue with both Napster and iTunes, because both formats can be burned to CD in CD format. Some CD players handle mp3 some don't. I never take the chance and just make normal audio CDs from whatever format I have at the time.
Just make sure you select Audio CD in whatever software you use to burn the CD. iTunes does this automatically IIRC.
BTW the iTunes burn function works very well also. Mac OS ease of use available on Windows, there's a first :-)
