I never once said, and would never say, he was as good a singer as Sam
Cooke. The timbre of their voices is close, and it is obvious that
Steve Perry cops heavily from Sam Cooke (who, truth be told, recorded
plenty of dreck himself). The same can be said of Rod Stewart. This
does not mean for an instant that either of those guys knows how to
sing, which IMHO, they don't. It's just how their natural voices
sound.
When you have veto power over personnel decisions, sounds to me like
you own the band, Boom. And when Journey was at its commercial peak
--which is the only peak that matters in the making and selling of
records-- this was most definitely the case and not merely my opinion.
