He wasn't assigned to the Beatles. He agreed to audition them. Martin
was head of Parlophone Records at the time and it was soley his choice
to sign them to a contract, something six other major labels had
already pass on.
Prior to the Beatles, he worked with Stan Getz, Judy Garland, Dudley
Moore and the Goons (featuring Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan). He
even had a number one single in the UK two years before working with
the Beatles: "You're Driving Me Crazy" by the Temperance Seven. Not a
bad resume.
