The ONLY kind of solder to use until you are highly experienced is
FRESH, ROSIN CORE solder of 63/37 lead-tin composition.

Unfortunately, those of us who live in a country that is joined to a
totalitarian federal union are not allowed to buy lead solder. You can
thank the EUSSR (in part) for the fact that Marshall amps often have
problems with bad solder joins in recent years.

you can buy leaded solder as long as you wish. And you may still
"officially" use it to repair units from the rpe ROHS era.

The only thing you must not do is build and sell new units with leaded
solder....

Check your local dealer and buy leaded solder as much as you want...

Controls seem pretty severe, JH. I use lead-based white oil paint
(fine art, not houses) made by Old Holland. I think their
manufacturing is still based in the Netherlands. As of about a month
ago, the price of small tubes of Cremnitz White (pure lead carbonate)
went from about $12 to $55.

Is there a replacement? You can always roll yer own lead acetate
from car batteries and acetic acid, then do the process to make
carbonate. And I see lead acetate as a reagant available
online...

This may be the last of existing stock, or
maybe manufacturing costs have just increased drastically, I don't
know. But at that price, they won't be selling enough to continue
production anyway. I suspect that the same type of thing is
propagating through supply lines for lead-based solder in many
countries.

It's insane. I have a back stock of solder, but I bet I haven't used
three grams of it over thirty years. And if I *hadn't* used it,
something would have gone into a landfill.

I'm sure that this is all part of an extravagant Obama plot to prevent
manufacture of bullets. Got guns? Won't matter. :-)

Cue "food gathering in post-Industrial America."
